Chapter 10

Lauren’s heart started to pound, and she pulled Piper closer. The man looked like a thug in the shadows. When he came closer, she saw that it was the waiter who had smiled at her in the club. He was dressed now, wearing a black leather jacket and jeans. When he saw her, he ran his fingers through his short sandy hair and then smiled. He was just a man. Lauren’s heart lifted and the tension melted away.

She glanced at the man.

He passed them and she exhaled the breath she’d been subconsciously holding and then shrieked into the heavy hand that closed over her mouth. It pulled her backwards against the solid bulk of his chest and she lost her grip on Piper’s hand. An arm wrapped around her stomach like a steel band, squeezing the air from her. Lauren struggled, frantic to escape. Two thoughts pounded through her spinning mind.

They had found her. They were everywhere.

“Lauren!” Piper screamed and started towards her.

Lauren reached out to her. The waiter held her tighter, his body pressing against her back. The fear in Piper’s eyes spurred her on. Lashing out, Lauren kicked the man hard in the shin. He dropped her and she stumbled forwards, hands skimming the pavement as she tried to regain her balance. She snatched Piper’s hand and ran. Her legs shook but she kept going. Her breathing was loud in her ears, creating a cacophony when combined with her thundering heartbeat and the words screaming in her head.

Run. Run fast. Don’t stop and don’t look back. Just run, and don’t let go of Piper.

Her legs started to tire. She couldn’t see the Underground station anywhere. The area didn’t look anything like the one where it was.

They were going the wrong way.

Chapter 9

This was a bad idea and if Julian found out what she was doing, he was going to be angry.

Lauren stared up at the blue neon sign that promised ‘Seventh Heaven’ and stuffed her hands into the pockets of her dark brown combat jacket. Piper stood beside her in the street, hunched up in her shiny blue bomber jacket with the chill winter breeze tousling her ponytail. Leo stood to her other side, his hands jammed into his jeans pockets, pulling his open long black coat back and emphasising the breadth of his build. He frowned at the sign.

She’d told everyone the name of the club but had neglected to mention it was a strip joint. Leo wouldn’t have come with them if she had and she needed him around in case werewolves somehow found her.

The wind chased over her skin, freezing her to the bone. The man on the door of the club called over to her, asking whether they were coming in or not. Lauren’s gaze remained fixed on the sign.

This was a very bad idea.

When she’d gone back into the building after Julian had left her to hunt, she’d gone straight to her bedroom and found her phone vibrating on the bedside table. She’d been shocked to find it working and even more surprised to receive a voicemail message from her friend Vicky saying they were worried about her and asking whether she was still coming tonight. Lauren had tried to call her back but the phone had died again when it was ringing at the other end. She’d left the phone on her bed and had gone down to the kitchen. Piper had been there with Kuga and Leo, all laughing about something. Lauren had tried to join in, to get Julian off her mind and to stop herself thinking about her friends, but it had been impossible. In the end, she’d given in and asked the trio to help her.

She had to see if her friends and let them know that she was okay.

Piper had told her that Julian wanted Lauren to stay with her. Lauren had responded by asking her to come too. Kuga had been against the idea, but Leo had surprised her by offering to go with her. She only wanted to see them and make sure they were fine. She would leave as soon as she’d explained things.

Her heart beat fast in her throat and her skin crawled when she cast a glance around at the shadowy streets, afraid the werewolves would find her.

Leo looked back over at her and she nodded. They would go in, find her friends, and get back to the Ghost building. No messing around. Nothing bad was going to happen.

Chapter 8

Julian stopped on a rooftop a short distance from the Ghost safe house. He looked back towards it, a part of him hoping to catch a glimpse of Lauren still standing there watching for him. She was beautiful tonight. He had noticed her the moment she had walked in and looked at him, had felt her gaze burning into him and had felt her turn away to speak with Duke. When Duke had touched her, Julian had wanted to go to Lauren and take hold of her. Instinct had told him to stake his territory. A ridiculous idea. Lauren wasn’t his. She was free to talk to whoever she wanted.

But it hurt to see her talking to Duke and ignoring him, until he had sensed the change in her feelings. It had been a hint of sadness or pain. He couldn’t quite pinpoint the emotion but she had felt something, and then she had left the room. Why? He had considered it while trying to end his conversation with Astra and the only conclusion he could find was a ridiculous one. Lauren hadn’t liked him speaking with Astra and she had left to get his attention. He couldn’t bring himself to believe something so fantastical. He was reading into it. But if she was jealous, it would explain the way she acted around Astra, and the feelings he saw in her eyes sometimes. He wished that he had gone to her straight away, as he’d wanted to, but Astra had stopped him from following Lauren, hindering him long enough that Duke had gone instead.

Julian’s fingers curled into tight fists, the darkness he’d felt in that moment reclaiming him with a vengeance. Lauren didn’t realise just how beautiful she was, how the clothes she wore tonight emphasised her delicate figure and made him burn for her. It had been a struggle to keep his eyes off her, to resist the temptation she placed in his path. And it had made him think, so much so that he hadn’t heard a word that Astra had said to him. His focus had been wholly on Lauren and his thoughts, on trying to figure out just what it was about her that felt different. In the end, he had found no satisfying conclusion, only a sense that there was something new about her, something that distinguished her from the rest.

When he had gone to her, found Duke with his hands on her, a rage blacker than any he’d felt before had consumed him.

He’d been ready to fight Duke for her.

But then Duke had left and Lauren had looked at him with such tenderness that he had found himself believing that she did want his attention and that she had been jealous. His heart had been pounding by the time she’d approached him, stepping so close that he could clearly smell her sweet scent and feel her warmth. He’d thought she would change her mind again and wouldn’t go through with unmasking him but this time she hadn’t backed down. There had been such determination in her eyes, not just about overcoming her fear of what she would become but also about seeing him. He’d caught her glancing his way, seen how she’d stared at the collar of his coat with her fists clenched in restraint. He’d watched her when she thought no one was.

He was always watching her.

She entranced him.

Chapter 7

Lauren kicked the hem of her dark jeans so they covered the tongues of her black trainers and then tugged on the sleeves of her plum long sleeve kimono-style top. She smoothed the thin material over her breasts, allowing a modest amount of cleavage to show. It was cold in her top but she wanted to look good. She wanted Julian’s attention.

She combed her fingers through her red hair, twisting the ends so they flicked up and out.

She only wished that she could straighten out her nerves as easily.

Julian had left when she’d been dressing. He’d told her to pass the day away with Kuga, Leo and Piper if she couldn’t sleep, and to come to Duke’s office the next night. Piper had kindly gone out and bought her some beauty products and other necessities. She’d used all of them to make herself look more presentable and as pretty as she could manage. It had taken a while, giving her time to see the night fall and to think about why Julian would want her to go to Duke’s office. Now she stood outside it, trying to get her feelings into order and still wondering what awaited her on the other side.

Only one way to find out.

She opened the dark wooden door and stepped inside. The first thing she noticed was Astra talking to Julian. He stood to her right near the bookcases, with his hand resting on the hilt of his katana where it hung at his side, hidden beneath his coat. Astra glanced over at her and then smiled at Julian with bright red lips, touching his shoulder as she did so. She moved closer to him, a sway in her hips that Lauren didn’t like. It caused the slit up the side of Astra’s long black dress to open and reveal her thigh. Her smile widened and she ran her fingers through her glossy black hair, pushing it out of her face. A flicker of jealousy flared into life inside Lauren when Astra’s fingers slid slowly and sensually over the black material of Julian’s coat and she laughed, high and very feminine, about something.

“You’re looking better.” Duke came out from behind his large mahogany desk and crossed the room to Lauren. “Are you feeling better?”

Lauren threw a furtive glance Julian’s way and saw that Astra was now smiling right into his eyes.

“I was,” she muttered and turned her back on Astra.
